Maliki Orders US Military Out of Sadr City

And the Americans comply. The Sadr City siege is over, and Baghdad officially can never be secured, now, by definition. The Iraqi police are totally riddled with infiltrating militiamen, the Washington Post reports today.

Supporters of anti-American Shi’ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr celebrated in the streets of Sadr City, bastion of his Mehdi Army. An aide hailed the end of a “barbaric siege” begun to help find a kidnapped U.S. soldier possibly being held by militiamen.

He’s as good as dead. And an untold number of US troops who fought since Thursday to save him from the kidnapping militia leader ARE dead. The Mogadishu moment has been reached, the Iraq experiment is officially a lost cause.

Machines Reverse Democrat Votes to Republican in Texas

So far, nationwide, I have seen multiple stories of Democrat voters complaining their votes were switched to Republican, but never in the other direction. How can all “digitizing” errors around the country favor the same party? Is this also happening to Republican voters, who then refuse to complain? That seems unlikely to me.

HELICOPTERS IN USE AS BRITISH FLEE BASRA CONSULATE

This is the headquarters of the British Empire in Iraq. It’s literally the equivalent of the US evacuating their Embassy in the Green Zone in Baghdad due to hostile fire. Now the question is whether the consulate, the symbol of Britain’s role in the war, will be taken over by Shi’ite militias and how soon they will try.

Letter From a Dead Marine

Newsweek The author didn’t live to see this published:

My 3 month informed opinion (based entirely on what I see in the Hit region) is that this war is futile. Even the Iraqi soldiers tell us that when America leaves, they’ll quit. They trust us because they know Americans can take care of them, but they don’t trust their government, or the Ministry of Defense, and they especially don’t trust their officers […] Funny, I feel the same way sometimes.

TIME Magazine: Bush Prepares for Armageddon if Democrats Win House

You think Bush isn’t scared of a Democratic victory in the House of Representatives?

In fact, when it comes to deploying its Executive power, which is dear to Bush’s understanding of the presidency, the President’s team has been planning for what one strategist describes as “a cataclysmic fight to the death” over the balance between Congress and the White House if confronted with congressional subpoenas it deems inappropriate. The strategist says the Bush team is “going to assert that power, and they’re going to fight it all the way to the Supreme Court on every issue, every time, no compromise, no discussion, no negotiation.”

Why is he so scared of subpoenas?

Election Chaos Begins

Blackwell got his way; despite the bad news I still think the Ohio GOP candidates are doomed including Sen. DeWine. In Florida, people who voted Democrat in the Governor’s race have seen their vote recorded for the Republican. Here we go, folks.

NATO Attack Killed 60 Afghan Civilians: AP

AP

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) - At least 60 civilians were killed during NATO operations in a volatile southern area of Afghanistan this week, two government officials and a civilian said Thursday.
If confirmed, it would be the highest civilian death toll in an operation involving Western forces since the U.S.-led invasion in 2001.
NATO has said its forces killed 48 militants in heavy fighting in the Panjwayi district of Kandahar province Tuesday. The alliance said it only knew of four civilians wounded in the battle but that it had “credible reports” of other casualties.
Kandahar provincial council member Bismallah Afghanmal said 80 to 85 civilians were killed in fighting. A villager, Karim Jan, said 60 to 70 died. Another government official, who asked not to be named because it would “cause me problems,” said at least 60 died.
