1996 War Crimes Law Frightens Bush Administration

Washington Post -

An obscure law approved by a Republican-controlled Congress a decade ago has made the Bush administration nervous that officials and troops involved in handling detainee matters might be accused of committing war crimes, and prosecuted at some point in U.S. courts.

Senior officials have responded by drafting legislation that would grant U.S. personnel involved in the terrorism fight new protections against prosecution for past violations of the War Crimes Act of 1996. That law criminalizes violations of the Geneva Conventions governing conduct in war and threatens the death penalty if U.S.-held detainees die in custody from abusive treatment.

You can’t change the law after the fact; only the law that was in place at the time the crime was committed, counts. This is similar to Specter’s attempt to legalize the wiretapping crimes retroactively. It’s illegal.

Mass Murder Doesn’t Work

As a foreign policy - this heinous and pointless war crime, which is not “collateral damage” at all but totally militarily unnecessary, has forced the US to cave in to a UN-sanctioned cease fire. That’s the very last thing that Israel (and the US) wanted when they started this stupid war.

Illegal to Feed Hungry People

New York Times headline: “Las Vegas Makes It Illegal to Feed Homeless in Parks” - Note the use of the word “homeless” as a quasi-noun. This is one of the most insidious things you can possibly do with the English language, and is always a sign of bias by the writer against the humanity of human beings who are homeless. I’d be very proud, if I were in Vegas, to be arrested for breaking this “law” and heading to court. Humans, most of them fellow American citizens, are not pigeons. It costs $75 to get a worker ID card from the city of Las Vegas, without that it’s almost impossible to get a job.

‘Waiting to Get Blown Up’

“It sucks. Honestly, it just feels like we’re driving around waiting to get blown up. That’s the most honest answer I could give you,” said Spec. Tim Ivey, 28, of San Antonio, a muscular former backup fullback for Baylor University. “You lose a couple friends and it gets hard.”

Israeli Air Force Bombs UN Post

Israeli bomb kills UN observers

It said the four, from Austria, Canada, China and Finland, had taken shelter in a bunker under the post after it was earlier shelled 14 times by Israeli artillery.

A rescue team was also shelled as it tried to clear the rubble.

“I am shocked and deeply distressed by the apparently deliberate targeting by Israeli Defence Forces of a UN Observer post in southern Lebanon,” Mr Annan said in a statement from Rome.
